Facebook Groups Auto-Posting Discontinued: What to Use Instead

Updated: 2026-08-20

This post originally explained how to add the PostRSS app to a Facebook Group to enable automated posting. That functionality is no longer available: Facebook removed third-party app support for Groups on April 22, 2024, as part of a broader API change. Below is what actually changed, why it happened, and what to use instead.

If you've used PostRSS (or any other automation tool) to post to a Facebook Group in the past, you may have noticed that this stopped working at some point. This wasn't a bug on any individual tool's side — it was a platform-wide change made by Meta.

What Changed

In April 2024, Facebook discontinued the API permissions that allowed third-party applications to read group feeds and publish posts to Facebook Groups on a member's behalf. This affected every automation and scheduling tool that previously supported Group posting — not just PostRSS, but essentially the entire category of social media scheduling software.

Since then, the only ways to post to a Facebook Group are:

  • Manually, logged in as yourself or as a Page connected to the group.
  • Through browser-session-based tools that act inside your own logged-in Facebook session (rather than through the официal API) — a fundamentally different and less standardized approach than the token-based API integration PostRSS and similar tools rely on.

Why This Happened

Meta's direction with the Groups API had been toward tightening permissions for several years before the final removal in 2024, largely driven by privacy and platform-safety considerations — group content often includes more personal, community-specific context than a public Page, and broad third-party access to that content raised concerns Meta chose to address by removing the capability rather than adding more restrictions around it.

What This Means for Your Automation Strategy

If Facebook Groups were a core part of your distribution plan, this change likely already disrupted that workflow. The practical path forward is to shift that distribution effort toward Facebook Pages, which remain fully supported for automated posting:

  • Facebook Pages continue to support full API-based automation, including everything PostRSS offers — rich media, scheduled posting, and reliable syncing from your RSS feed.
  • If you manage both a Page and a Group for the same brand or community, consider using the Page as your primary automated distribution channel, and treat the Group as a space for direct community engagement that benefits from a human presence rather than automated posts anyway.
  • If most of your actual audience engagement happens in the Group rather than the Page, this is worth factoring into your broader platform strategy — a Group's value often comes from conversation and community moderation, which automation was never well-suited to replace.

Is Manual Group Posting Still Worth Doing?

Manual posting to a Group you actively participate in isn't necessarily a downgrade — for many communities, a Group post from a real, engaged account owner performs better than an automated one would have anyway, since Groups tend to reward genuine participation over broadcast-style content. If Group posting made sense for your strategy, doing it manually (even just a few times a week) may still be worthwhile — it's simply no longer something PostRSS or similar tools can do on your behalf.

What Still Works With PostRSS

To be clear about what's unaffected by this change, PostRSS automation continues to fully support:

  • Facebook Pages — full automated posting, unaffected by the Groups API change.
  • X, LinkedIn, Pinterest, and VKontakte — all continue to support automated syndication as before.

Facebook Groups is the one specific integration that platform policy has removed industry-wide — not a limitation specific to PostRSS.

Getting Set Up on Facebook Pages Instead

  1. If you don't already have a Facebook Page for your brand, create one — Pages are free and support the full range of automation features.
  2. Connect your Page in your PostRSS dashboard at app.postrss.com through the standard secure authorization flow.
  3. Continue publishing on your website as usual — your RSS feed will sync automatically to your Page.
  4. Keep your Group (if you have one) for direct community interaction, posted to manually when it adds real value.
