Post to Instagram Within the 100-Posts-a-Day Limit

Instagram allows 100 published posts per account in any rolling 24-hour period. PostRSS checks that limit before every post, and when a busy feed reaches it, the remaining items are published later instead of being thrown away.

Instagram publishing is currently in testing while approval from Meta is pending.

What the limit is, and what it is not

The number you will still find in older articles is 25. Meta’s current documentation says 100 posts within a 24-hour moving period, and it provides an endpoint that reports how many of those have already been used. A carousel — several pictures in one post — counts as a single post.

It is a rolling window, not a midnight reset. If fifty posts went out at nine this morning, those fifty stay counted until nine tomorrow morning.

Why PostRSS checks it before publishing

Meta’s documentation asks applications that publish automatically to enforce the limit themselves, and there is a practical reason to do so. If a tool ignores it and simply fires requests, the first refusal looks like an error, the item may be marked as failed, and the post is gone. Checking first turns a hard failure into a delay.

So before each post, PostRSS asks Instagram how much of the allowance is used. If the account is at the limit, the item stays in the queue and is published once the window has moved on. You see the reason in plain words — the daily publishing limit has been reached, this post will be published later — not a red error.

Who actually hits 100 posts a day

Almost nobody. To reach it, a single feed would have to produce more than four new items every hour, all day, all going to the same Instagram account. In practice the limit matters in two situations:

  • A first import. Pointing PostRSS at a feed with a long history and asking it to publish everything can produce a burst.
  • Several feeds, one account. The limit belongs to the Instagram account, not to the target, so three feeds pointing at one account share the same 100.

In both cases nothing is lost — the run simply takes longer than a day.

How to avoid the burst

  • When adding a source, set the date from which items should be published rather than publishing the entire archive.
  • Use the maximum posts per update setting to smooth a large feed into a steady stream.
  • If several feeds share one Instagram account, consider whether they should really go to the same place.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does the limit apply per PostRSS plan?
No. It is Instagram’s limit, applied per Instagram account, and it is the same for everyone.

Do failed posts count?
Only published posts count. A post that was refused for another reason does not use up the allowance.

What happens to items waiting for the window?
They stay in the queue in order and are published as capacity frees up. Nothing is deleted.

Can I see how much of the limit is used?
PostRSS reads it before each post. When the limit is the reason for a delay, that is stated on the target.
