Telegram Channel Hashtags From RSS Categories: Build Navigation

Short answer: In a Telegram channel, hashtags work mainly as navigation: tapping one shows every earlier post with the same hashtag, so subscribers can browse your archive by topic. For an RSS-fed channel, turn each item’s main category into one or two hashtags, keep the vocabulary small and stable, and place the hashtag where it reads like a label. Add a pinned message that lists the hashtags, and your channel becomes a searchable library instead of an endless scroll.

Telegram channels have no algorithmic feed. Subscribers see posts in order, and after a few weeks older posts are effectively lost in the scroll. That is a problem for channels that publish useful, long-lived content from a blog, a shop or a news site. Hashtags solve it with almost no effort, because Telegram turns every hashtag into a clickable search. This guide explains how hashtags behave in Telegram channels, how to design a hashtag vocabulary from your feed categories, how to configure automatic hashtags for auto-posted items, and which mistakes make hashtags useless.

How hashtags work in Telegram

Any word that starts with # in a Telegram message becomes a link. When a subscriber taps it inside a channel, Telegram opens a search for that hashtag in the channel, listing all posts that contain it, newest first. Recent Telegram versions can also show matching posts from other chats and from public channels, but the in-channel search is what makes hashtags valuable for a channel owner: it is an instant topic index.

Hashtags in Telegram can use letters from any alphabet, digits and underscores. Spaces and most punctuation end the hashtag, so #social media becomes the hashtag #social followed by the plain word media. That is why multi-word topics are usually written in CamelCase, such as #SocialMedia, which stays readable and works with screen readers.

Telegram’s own channels FAQ covers the basics of running a channel. Hashtags are one of the few tools it gives you for organising content after it has been posted.

Navigation, not discovery

On networks such as Instagram or Mastodon, hashtags help strangers find your posts. In Telegram channels, discovery happens mostly through links, forwards and channel recommendations, while hashtags help people who already subscribe. This changes how you choose them:

  • Consistency beats popularity. A hashtag is useful only if it is used on every post of that type, so readers can trust that tapping it shows everything.
  • Your own vocabulary beats trending tags. Generic popular hashtags bring nothing in a channel and dilute the index.
  • Few hashtags per post. One or two clear labels are easier to scan than a block of ten at the bottom of a message.
  • Stable names. Renaming a hashtag splits your archive into two halves that are found by different searches.

The general differences between networks are covered in the complete hashtag strategy guide for automated RSS posts. For Telegram channels, think of hashtags as the menu of your archive.

Design a hashtag vocabulary from your categories

Most RSS feeds already contain the raw material. Each item can have category elements, filled by your CMS from the post’s categories and tags, as defined in the RSS 2.0 specification. Before switching on automatic hashtags, turn those categories into a deliberate vocabulary:

  1. List what you publish. Look at the last fifty items and group them into five to twelve topics a reader would actually want to browse, such as Reviews, Guides, News, Deals and Events.
  2. Map categories to topics. If your site has thirty categories, decide which of them should become hashtags and which should not.
  3. Remove layout categories. Categories such as Featured, Homepage or Uncategorized describe your website, not the content.
  4. Check the order. Many systems list an item’s categories before its tags. If only the first one or two become hashtags, make sure the most meaningful category comes first.
  5. Write the list down. The same list goes into the pinned index message later.

Turn categories into hashtags automatically

PostRSS can create hashtags from each item’s own categories and tags. The settings sit on the source, under Filters and hashtags:

  • Hashtags. Turn on the option that turns the item’s categories and tags into hashtags. It is off by default.
  • Maximum hashtags. Choose from 1 to 10. For a Telegram channel, 1 or 2 is usually right.
  • Hashtag position. Place hashtags after the message text or before it.

Categories are cleaned up on the way: words are joined in CamelCase, so a category called social media becomes #SocialMedia; punctuation is removed, so COVID-19 becomes #COVID19; letters in other alphabets and accented characters are kept; categories that are only numbers, or are very long, are skipped; and a hashtag that is already in the text or repeats another is not added twice.

The message itself, with its link, stays intact. Telegram allows up to 4,096 characters in a text message, and hashtags that would not fit are left out rather than cut, so the link is never damaged. The link preview works as usual; if your cards look wrong, see Telegram link previews for RSS posts.

Before or after the text

The position changes how a channel reads.

Before the text, a single hashtag works like a label in a newspaper: #Review New mirrorless camera tested. Readers scanning the channel see the type of post first, and the hashtag is easy to tap. This works best with one hashtag per post and a small vocabulary.

After the text keeps the headline first, with hashtags as a quiet footer. This is better when you use two or three hashtags, or when headlines need to stand out on their own, for example in news channels.

Try both on a private test channel connected to the same feed, look at a full screen of posts on a phone, and choose the one that reads more naturally.

When categories are not enough: your own hashtags

Some feeds have poor categories or none at all, such as feeds generated from a page or a product catalogue. For those, PostRSS lets you type your own hashtags in the Your hashtags field. They are added to the end of every post, up to ten of them. Two patterns work well in Telegram:

  • A channel hashtag. One fixed hashtag such as #BlogPost on every automated item separates feed posts from hand-written announcements in the same channel. Tapping it lists only the automated items.
  • A source hashtag. When several feeds post to one channel, give each feed its own fixed hashtag, such as #Podcast și #Blog, so readers can filter by source.

You can also enter a longer list and let PostRSS pick a random few for each post, but in a Telegram channel randomness works against navigation. Keep random hashtags for networks where variety matters more than a reliable index.

Add a pinned hashtag index

Readers will not guess your vocabulary. Write one message by hand that explains it and pin it to the top of the channel:

  • A one-line introduction: tap a hashtag to see all posts on that topic.
  • The list of hashtags with a short description for each, such as #Guides step-by-step tutorials.
  • A link to your website or to a related group for questions.

Because every hashtag in the pinned message is clickable, it works as a menu. Update it when you add a topic, and keep the list short enough to read on one screen.

Multi-language and multi-feed channels

If you publish in several languages, separate channels per language are usually clearer than one mixed channel. Each channel gets its own feed, and hashtags then come in that language automatically, because they are built from that feed’s categories. If you prefer one channel for all languages, add a language hashtag such as #EN sau #DE as a fixed hashtag per feed, so readers can filter by language.

When several feeds post into one channel, keep the overall vocabulary consistent: the same topic should have the same hashtag regardless of which feed it came from. Otherwise #Guide from one feed and #Guides from another split the archive.

A worked example

Imagine a cycling shop with a WordPress blog and a Telegram channel of a few thousand subscribers. The blog has categories for Repair Guides, Product Reviews, Group Rides and Shop News, plus dozens of tags for brands and parts. The owner wants the channel to be the place where customers look up a repair guide months after it was posted.

The setup is simple. In WordPress, every post gets exactly one of the four categories, listed first. In PostRSS, automatic hashtags are turned on for the channel’s source with a maximum of one and the position set before the text, so each message starts with #RepairGuides, #ProductReviews, #GroupRides sau #ShopNews. Brand tags never appear, because only the first category is used. A pinned message explains the four hashtags in one line each.

Six months later, a customer who asks how to adjust disc brakes can be answered with one sentence: tap #RepairGuides in the channel. The channel has become a small, well-organised knowledge base without anyone tagging a single post by hand.

Check whether readers use hashtags

Telegram channel statistics show views per post, and links can carry UTM parameters so your analytics shows visits from the channel. Older posts that keep receiving views and visits long after publication are a good sign that readers reach them through hashtag searches. If nobody seems to browse older posts, the vocabulary may be too large, the pinned index may be missing, or the hashtags may not match how readers think about your content.

Common mistakes

  • Every tag becomes a hashtag. Sites with many tags per post produce long hashtag blocks. Set a low maximum or use fixed hashtags instead.
  • Layout categories leak through. #Featured on half your posts tells readers nothing.
  • Singular and plural variants. #Review și #Reviews are different hashtags in search. Pick one form in your CMS.
  • Renaming categories casually. A renamed category creates a new hashtag, and older posts are no longer found by it.
  • Copying settings from other networks. The hashtag count that suits one network can be wrong for a channel. Each target can have its own source settings.

How PostRSS helps

PostRSS has been publishing RSS and Atom feeds to social networks and messengers since 2014, and Telegram channels are among its 66 supported networks. Each new item is posted as a message with its link, and Telegram builds the preview from your page. Automatic hashtags from item categories, your own fixed hashtags, keyword filters, posting windows and UTM parameters let you shape every channel. The connection steps are on the auto-post RSS to Telegram page, every option is on the features page, and plan limits are on the pricing page.

The bottom line

Hashtags turn a Telegram channel’s endless scroll into an archive readers can browse. Build a small vocabulary from your feed categories, clean out layout categories, let automatic hashtags add one or two labels per post, or use fixed hashtags when categories are weak. Choose a position that reads well, pin an index message, and keep names stable so every tap shows the complete set.

FAQ

What do hashtags do in a Telegram channel?

Tapping a hashtag searches the channel for all posts that contain it. That lets subscribers browse older posts by topic, which is especially useful for channels with long-lived content.

How many hashtags should a Telegram post have?

Usually one or two. Telegram hashtags are labels for navigation, so a small, consistent set works better than many hashtags per post.

Can RSS categories become Telegram hashtags automatically?

Yes. PostRSS can turn each item’s categories and tags into hashtags, with a maximum you choose and a position before or after the text. Multi-word categories are joined in CamelCase.

Do hashtags count toward the Telegram message limit?

Yes, they are part of the text, which can be up to 4,096 characters. Hashtags that would not fit are left out, and the link is never cut.

Why are some of my categories not turned into hashtags?

Categories that are only numbers, very long, duplicates or already present in the text are skipped. Check also the maximum number of hashtags set for the source.
