Forum RSS Feeds: phpBB, NodeBB and XenForo Auto-Posting

Short answer: Most forum software publishes feeds for new topics and replies. phpBB serves them from feed.php, NodeBB adds .rss to category and recent pages, and XenForo offers index.rss addresses for forums. Choose a public announcement or new-topics feed, check what a guest can see, add moderation safeguards and paste the address into an auto-poster. New discussions then appear on your social channels with a title and a link, and your community grows beyond the forum itself.

Forums are the long memory of the internet. A well-run forum holds years of answers, reviews and friendships, and its best threads often rank well in search. Yet many forums depend on people remembering to visit. A new topic about a product release, a club event or a question that deserves attention can sit unnoticed for hours. Feeds solve this by sending each new topic to the places where members already spend time: a chat server, a messaging channel or a social account. This guide explains where the main forum platforms keep their feeds, how to choose the right one, how to protect private content and how to share new topics automatically.

Why share forum activity

A forum feed can serve several goals. For a support forum, it shows new questions to the staff who answer them. For a hobby or fan community, it invites outsiders to read interesting threads and join. For a company, it turns the announcements section into a news channel. For a local club, it carries event notices to people who have not yet registered. The common benefit is reach: members who rarely log in still see the headline and click through, and new visitors discover that the community is active. A feed also reduces the manual work of moderators and community managers who would otherwise copy links by hand.

phpBB feeds

phpBB includes a feed script named feed.php, which outputs Atom. Administrators can switch feeds on and set limits in the administration panel, in the board configuration section, under feed settings. When feeds are enabled, you can build addresses such as these:

  • /feed.php for the latest posts of the whole board;
  • /feed.php?mode=topics for the newest topics;
  • /feed.php?mode=topics_new або /feed.php?mode=topics_active for new or active topics, if your version offers them;
  • /feed.php?mode=news for the forum that the administrator chose as the news source;
  • /feed.php?f=5 for one forum, where the number is the forum ID, and /feed.php?f=5&t=20 for one topic.

The forum ID appears in the address when you open a forum in the browser. Feeds respect permissions: only content visible to guests is shown to a visitor who is not logged in, so a private section stays out of a public feed. Settings and available modes differ between versions, so open the address in a browser and check that the result looks right.

NodeBB feeds

NodeBB is a modern forum platform built on Node.js. Many of its pages can be turned into a feed by adding .rss to the address. Typical examples are:

  • /recent.rss for the latest topics across the forum;
  • /category/3/announcements.rss for one category, with the real category number and name;
  • /topic/42/example-topic.rss for replies in a single topic;
  • feeds for tags and popular topics, on pages that offer a feed link.

The category feed is the most useful for announcements. Open the category page in your browser and look for the feed icon or a link in the page head, which shows the exact address your version supports.

XenForo feeds

XenForo, a commercial forum platform, publishes feeds from the forum list and from individual forums. The address of a forum usually ends in /index.rss, for example /forums/announcements.3/index.rss, and the overall forum list offers a combined feed. Like the other platforms, XenForo applies permissions as a guest sees them. If your forum requires registration to read, an external service cannot fetch the feed. Check the addresses in the forum navigation or in the page source, because add-ons and style changes can alter them.

Other platforms

Some forums need extra steps. Discourse has its own feeds and is covered in RSS to Discourse. Flarum has no feed in its core, and the community offers extensions. Older systems such as vBulletin and SMF generally provide a syndication or RSS page that you can find in the forum menu. If you cannot find a feed at all, look for an administrator option, an extension or a plugin, or build a small news page that lists the topics you want to share, with its own feed.

For public channels, the announcements category is the best starting point because staff control it. A new-topics feed can work for a friendly, well-moderated community, but it should be filtered and delayed, as described below.

Protect your members and your channels

A forum feed publishes content written by members. That brings responsibilities that a company blog does not have:

  • Check the rules. Make sure your terms of use allow topic titles and links to be shared outside the forum, and say so in the rules. Share only the title and a link, not the full text of a post.
  • Keep private sections private. Test the feed while logged out. If a restricted topic title appears, fix the permissions before you connect the feed.
  • Prevent spam from going public. New topics from new accounts can be spam or abuse. Moderate the first posts of new members, or add a delay of an hour or two so that moderators can remove a topic before it is announced.
  • Protect personal data. Titles sometimes contain names, addresses or health details. Remind members not to write them, and remove such topics quickly.
  • Be ready to react. Know who can delete a social post if a thread turns into an argument.

These steps are not complicated, but they decide whether the feed is a benefit or a risk. Many communities start with the announcements category and widen the scope only after a few weeks of trouble-free operation.

What the post will look like

Forum feeds usually contain the topic title, the author, the date and a short part of the first post. The title is the most important element, so encourage members and moderators to write clear titles. “Help!!!” is a poor headline, while “Brake pads squeal after replacement: what did I miss?” works as a post. For announcements, staff can write the title in the style of a headline. Posts that include an image perform better on most networks; if your forum software does not expose images in the feed, the auto-poster may use the first image of the linked page through its Open Graph tags; see why auto-posted links show the wrong image.

Frequency and caching

A busy forum creates many topics each hour. Decide how many posts per day your channel can carry. If a feed produces more than a handful of topics daily, narrow it by category or use keyword filters. Do not let ten announcements appear within a minute; spread posts over the day, as explained in posting only on weekdays or in business hours. Forum software often caches feeds for a short time, and a content delivery network may cache them longer; see RSS feed caching explained. If the forum is protected by a firewall or bot filter, make sure the feed is reachable; see Cloudflare blocking your RSS feed.

Support forums, clubs and brand communities

The right setup depends on the purpose of the forum. A support forum benefits from an internal feed that goes to a staff chat, so that new questions reach the people who can answer them within minutes. A public feed from the same forum should contain only solved or highlighted topics, for example a pinned guide, because open questions look unfinished on social media. A club or hobby forum can announce events, meetings and results from a dedicated category, and leave general chat inside the forum. A brand community can use the announcements category for releases and campaigns, and a showcase category for member projects, with the author’s permission. In every case, one clear purpose per feed is better than a single feed that tries to serve everyone.

Old threads and evergreen topics

The best forums contain threads that stay useful for years: a guide to a common problem, a beginners’ checklist, a buying advice thread. A feed announces topics when they are created, but you can give old threads a second life by creating a short news item that links to them, for example “Most helpful guides of the year”, and letting the news feed share it. This keeps valuable content visible without reposting discussions. Be careful to link only to threads whose authors would be happy to see them promoted, and check that the information is still correct before you share it again.

Choose the right channels

  • Discord or team chat. The natural companion of a forum community; see posting to a Discord server.
  • Telegram. A channel with new topics and announcements is easy to follow; see the Telegram guide.
  • Mastodon and Bluesky. Good for technical and hobby communities.
  • Facebook Page or LinkedIn. Suitable for brand and club forums that want public visibility.

A ten-minute set-up plan

  1. Enable feeds in the forum settings and find the address of your announcements category.
  2. Open the address while logged out and check that only public items appear.
  3. Run the address through the W3C Feed Validation Service.
  4. Add the address as a source in an auto-poster and connect your channels.
  5. Set a short delay or posting window, and add UTM parameters to see which channel brings visits.
  6. Create a test topic and confirm that it is announced once.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Using the latest replies feed. It floods the channel and repeats the same topics.
  • Leaking private topics. Always test as a guest.
  • No moderation delay. Spam and abuse reach social media within minutes.
  • Posting full text. Share the title and a link, and let readers come to the forum.
  • Poor titles. Teach members to write descriptive titles; they help search engines as well.

The bottom line

Forum platforms already publish the feeds you need. Enable them, find the address of your announcements category or new-topics list, test it as a guest, protect your channels with moderation and a short delay, and share only titles and links. Choose the channels where your community and your future members already gather. After that, every important discussion reaches people without anyone copying links by hand.

FAQ
