Instagram Captions and Links From Your RSS Feed

PostRSS writes the Instagram caption for you from your feed item — the title, the text and the link — trimmed to Instagram’s 2,200-character limit. There is one Instagram rule worth knowing before you set this up, and it is about links.

Instagram publishing is currently in testing while approval from Meta is pending.

Links in captions are not clickable

This is Instagram’s own behaviour and it applies to every post from every tool: a web address written in a caption is shown as plain text. Readers cannot tap it. Instagram keeps clickable links for the profile bio, for stickers and for paid placements.

PostRSS still writes the link into the caption, and that is a deliberate choice. A reader who sees where an article came from can find it — by typing the address, by searching the title, or by going to the profile. A caption with no source at all simply tells them nothing.

What the caption is built from

The caption follows the message format you choose for the target, exactly like every other network in PostRSS:

  • The item title, which for most feeds is the headline of the article.
  • The description or an excerpt, when your format includes it.
  • The link, added at the end.

If the result is longer than 2,200 characters, it is trimmed cleanly rather than cut mid-word, and the link is kept.

Writing captions that suit Instagram

An Instagram caption is read differently from a Facebook post or a tweet. A few things that help:

  • Put the point in the first line. Instagram hides the rest behind “more”, so the first sentence decides whether the rest is read.
  • Use a handful of hashtags, not thirty. They can be part of your message format, so they are added to every post automatically.
  • Mention where the link goes. “Full article: example.com/title” works better than a bare address, because the reader knows why they would type it.
  • Keep the profile link current. Since captions cannot be clicked, the address in your bio is the one that carries the traffic.

What about emoji and other alphabets

Both are fine. Instagram counts characters, and PostRSS counts them the same way, so Lithuanian, Polish, Greek or Arabic text is trimmed correctly rather than by bytes. Emoji in your message format are passed through unchanged.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use a different caption format for Instagram than for other networks?
Yes. Message format is a property of the target, so the Instagram target can differ from your Facebook or X targets.

Can the link be left out entirely?
Yes, if your message format does not include it. Some publishers prefer a clean caption and rely on the bio link.

Are hashtags added automatically?
Only the ones you put in your message format. PostRSS does not invent hashtags.

What happens to HTML in the feed item?
It is stripped. Instagram captions are plain text, so markup would only appear as clutter.
